Baby sleeping

As a parent, you’re constantly making decisions that affect your baby’s well-being, including how they sleep. One popular tool many parents use is white noise, often used to soothe babies and help them sleep better. But is white noise actually safe for your children? I spoke to PureWow and gave my thoughts. Keep reading to see what we think about white noise machines and the quotes we offer.

Understanding White Noise: What Is It?

White noise is a consistent sound that masks other noises in the environment, creating a calming and steady auditory background. It can range from the hum of a fan to the static sound from a radio or a specific white noise machine. Many parents use white noise to replicate the sounds of the womb, helping their baby feel more secure and drift off to sleep more easily.

Why Should You Use White Noise for Babies?

It can help create a sense of familiarity and comfort for infants, which can be an important factor in supporting their overall well-being,

Is White Noise Harmful for Babies or Toddlers?

You probably already suspect that the answer to this question is generally no. It isn’t bad for babies or toddlers, however, it is important to say mindful of the volume of the white noise and the distance from the baby.

What Is the Ideal Volume for White Noise?

You want the volume of the white noise to be about as loud as a conversation you normally speak without raising your voice.

How to Wean Off White Noise

It is important to decrease the volume of the sound machine gradually once a child is sleeping through the night, thus moving toward eliminating it completely.

Final Thoughts

White noise can be a helpful tool in your baby’s sleep routine, but like any tool, it’s important to use it wisely. By ensuring the volume is low, using it only during sleep, and choosing the right device, you can safely incorporate white noise into your baby’s sleep environment. However, my biggest request is that once your child is sleeping through the night, it is ideal to ELIMINATE the use of the sound machine and ONLY use it for loud sound disruptions, such as thunderstorms and fireworks that may wake your child during a nap or overnight.
